Being Digital by Nicholas Negroponte Paperback – 272 pages (January 1996) Vintage Books; ISBN: 0679762906.

Reflections on the differences between bits and atoms.  As the founder of MIT's Media Lab and a popular columnist for Wired, Nicholas Negroponte has amassed a following of dedicated readers. Being Digital, is an edited version of the 18 articles he wrote for Wired about "being digital."  In the beginning, he describes the evolution of CD-ROMs, multimedia, hypermedia, HDTV (high-definition television), and more. The section on interfaces is informative, offering an up-to-date history on visual interfaces, graphics, virtual reality (VR), holograms, teleconferencing hardware, the mouse and touch-sensitive interfaces, and speech recognition.  In the last chapter and the epilogue, Negroponte offers visionary insight on what "being digital" means for our future. Negroponte praises computers for their educational value but recognizes certain dangers of technological advances, such as increased software and data piracy and huge shifts in our job market that will require workers to transfer their skills to the digital medium. Overall, Being Digital provides an informative history of the rise of technology and some interesting predictions for its future.

Rembrandts in the Attic: Unlocking the Hidden Value of Patents by Kevin G. Rivette and David Kline – Hardcover – 221 pages (December 1999) Harvard Business School Pr; ISBN: 0875848990.

Practical advice for competing in today's intellectual property arena. If you think patents are just about protecting inventions such as the film projector, you're missing the big picture. Now that ideas can be protected--for example, Priceline.com's business model--patents can be wielded to intimidate competitors, uncover their strategies, capture market segments, and, for many companies, generate millions in licensing revenues.

Unleashing the Killer App: Digital Strategies for Market Dominance by Larry Downes, Chunka Mui, Nicholas Negroponte - Hardcover - 243 pages (May 1998) Harvard Business School Press; ISBN: 087584801X.

The authors describe a killer app as a product or service that "wind up displacing unrelated older offerings, destroying and re-creating industries far from their immediate use, and throwing into disarray the complex relationships between business partners, competitors, customers, and regulators of markets." Examples of killer apps throughout history include the Welsh longbow, the pulley, the compass, moveable type, and the Apple Macintosh. And today, with our increasingly networked economy (for example, the World Wide Web), killer apps are appearing all around us. Downes and Mui argue that the dominant trend behind the proliferation of killer apps is a combination of Moore's Law, which states that the processing power of the CPU doubles every 18 months, and Metcalfe's Law, which observes that the value of a network increases dramatically with each node that's added to it. These two laws are fundamentally changing how businesses interact with each other and with their customers. To exploit these changes, the authors outline 12 points for designing a digital strategy to help you identify and create killer apps in your own organization. The book includes dozens of examples of how killer apps were discovered and implemented.

Helping Your Child Sleep Through the Night by Joanne Cuthbertson, Susie Schevill – Paperback - 246 pages (March 1985) Main Street Books; ISBN: 0385192509.

Sleep deprivation -or- how to fix what you did wrong.  1st child or 5th child, they are each different. All too soon we forget the meaning of sleep deprivation.  Even when you have done it all wrong, everything the experts say not to do, even when you have a special 'difficult' case, there is real help that can cure your sleep deprivation.  This book can save your sleep and even your relationship with your spouse.  It does not preach. With simple suggestions, and many comments on how to fix what went wrong, you could not make a better investment in your sanity and sleep. Worth it at 10 times the price.

When I first wrote a review years ago my youngest was only 5 months old, after surgery 9 years later it still had the answers to get her back into a good night sleep. The content is still as relevant today as it was then. This book is NOT about 'letting your child cry' but about instilling good sleep habits and routines for the benefit of the child and the parents. Some reviewers have strongly commented about letting your child sleep on their stomach is dangerous.

That is NOT what this book is about.

THIS BOOK IS ABOUT MAKING YOUR CHILD FEEL SECURE & LEARNING HOW TO SETTLE THEMSELVES DOWN TO SLEEP AND TO GET BACK TO SLEEP.

It is not an overnight magic solution, but if you stick with it, it really works (even with a multiply handicapped child although you need to adapt some of the suggestions, one of our daughters has RETT Syndrome [please see http://unicornmeadows.org for more info on RETT syndrome]). 1st child or 5th child, they are each different. As a new born infant starts sleeping through the night, we all too soon forget the meaning of sleep deprivation. But when a child does not sleep through the night, neither do the parents. Even when you have done it all wrong, everything the experts say not to do, even when you have a special 'difficult' case, there is real help that can cure your sleep deprivation. This is still THE BEST BOOK on the subject and really can save your sleep and even your relationship with your spouse. Most importantly it does NOT preach. With simple suggestions, and many comments on how to fix what went wrong, you could not make a better investment in your sanity and sleep. Worth it at 10 times the price. We have given a number of copies as gifts and lent our copy out many times.

From the Publisher  - A good night's sleep is crucial both for a child's well-being and a parent's peace of mind. This positive, practical guide teaches parents to establish good sleeping habits in their kids and cope with the problems that cause sleepless nights, from colic to bed-wetting to nightmares.

2001 A Space Odyssey by Arthur Charles Clarke, Stanley Kubrick - Paperback – 256 pages (25th Anniversary issue August 1993) Roc Trade; ISBN: 0451452739.

When an enigmatic monolith is found buried on the moon, scientists are amazed to discover that it's at least 3 million years old. Even more amazing, after it's unearthed the artifact releases a powerful signal aimed at Saturn. What sort of alarm has been triggered? To find out, a manned spacecraft, the Discovery, is sent to investigate. Its crew is highly trained--the best--and they are assisted by a self-aware computer, the ultra-capable HAL 9000. But HAL's programming has been patterned after the human mind a little too well. He is capable of guilt, neurosis, even murder, and he controls every single one of Discovery's components. The crew must overthrow this digital psychotic if they hope to make their rendezvous with the entities that are responsible not just for the monolith, but maybe even for human civilization.  Clarke wrote this novel while Stanley Kubrick created the film, the two collaborating on both projects. The novel is much more detailed and intimate, and definitely easier to comprehend.

2001: A Space Odyssey shocked, amazed, and delighted millions in the late 1960s. An instant book and movie classic, its fame has grown over the years. Yet along with the almost universal acclaim, a host of questions has grown more insistent through the years, for example: who or what transformed Dave Bowman into the Star-Child? Now all those questions and many more have been answered, in this stunning sequel to the international bestseller. Cosmic in sweep, eloquent in its depiction of Man's place in the Universe, and filled with the romance of space, this novel is a monumental achievement and a must-read for Arthur C. Clarke fans old and new. "A daring romp through the solar system and a worthy successor to 2001." Carl Sagan

3001: The Final Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke - Paperback – 288 pages (January 1998) Del Rey; ISBN: 0345423496.

Fourth in Clarke's Odyssey series (2061: Odyssey Three, 1987, etc.). Here, at the beginning of the fourth millennium, the vacuum- frozen body of astronaut Frank Poole (murdered by poor mad computer HAL in the original 2001) is recovered and revived. Frank awakens to find he's a celebrity in an age of peace and plenty, with space elevators, inertia-less space drives, and miraculous teaching devices. Frank visits Jupiter (transformed into the mini-sun Lucifer in 2010: Odyssey Two) and ponders its ice-moon Europa, where a giant monolith is attempting to develop intelligence among the native lifeforms. And he meets that strange entity composed of Star Child Dave Bowman fused with a copy of now-sane HAL. Dubbed Halman by Frank, the entity warns of bad news arriving from the monolith's guiding intelligences 450 light-years distant: They've decided to destroy humankind. Europa's monolith, though, is just a supercomputer, not intelligent or self-aware, so Frank's associates decide to use Halman as a Trojan horse to infect the monolith with an irresistible computer virus--whereupon all the monoliths vanish.
