The Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer
will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that
one day, cancer will be eliminated.
Teams
come together to build community spirit, to honor loved ones and fight cancer –
and have fun in the process.

Thank you for sponsoring
me & supporting the American Cancer Society’s South Hunterdon Relay For
Life. The 2008 Relay For Life has marked
my 7th year of survivorship & participation. This May the weather was great for a
change. The relay raised $52,000 which
even exceeded our goal. This money will
go to research for cancer treatments & cure, and that is why I do it.
Thanks to your support our
team was once again recognized for the Most Team Spirit, as a Top Individual
Fundraiser & as a Top Team Fundraiser.
Thanks so much to those who came out to join us. A very special thanks to my dear family &
friends, who spent countless hours before, during & after the relay helping
me to make this relay a success. They
were relentless in their efforts with the Luminaria, doing laps, set up, clean
up & I really couldn’t have done it without them.
I think we all recognize
the enormous & intense physical effort that
preparation &
participation in the Relay For Life requires.
While I find myself somewhat torn, for my health & in the best interest
of my family I will be taking a much less active role in the Relay For Life
next year.
I wish you all good health
& urge you to continue to fight back against cancer.
Sincerely,
Cindy

Post event comment from the Luminaria Chairperson
I apologize to everyone
for not making it to the Relay as I kept vigil with family & friends at our
daughter Laura’s bedside gravely concerned if she would even survive that
night. I want to thank everyone for your
many prayers for Laura. I thank everyone
from my two teams who showed up & relayed for me. Thank you to everyone who helped at the Relay
to put out and cleanup the Luminaria. I
thank everyone who supported, sponsored, & inspired me, bought Luminaria
from & for me & helped me raise over $8,000 that our team turned in of
the Relay’s $57,000.

Introductory
remarks to the 2006 Luminaria Ceremony
I
apologize that my wife Cindy can not be here this evening. The Luminaria Ceremony has always had a very
special meaning to her. Unfortunately as
I speak, our 12 year old multiply‑handicapped daughter Laura, who has Rett Syndrome, after 18+
hours of uncontrollable seizures is in an ambulance with a special transport
team taking her from Hunterdon Medical Center to Children’s Hospital of
Philadelphia.
We must never forget that the real
meaning of The Relay For Life is not about fund raising or medical
research, it is about family, friends & community. It is about my beloved wife, a 5 year breast
cancer survivor, it is about children who have a parent with cancer, it is
about children with cancer like little Nicholas Hope1 who is here
tonight. It is about my Godmother &
Aunt Agnes Bulich and my Uncle Richard Breese who both very painfully lost
there battles with cancer when I was quite young. It is about my Aunt Anne & Uncle Joseph
Felix and our neighbor Ken Totten2 who each are now fighting their
battles with cancer. It is for them
as well as for others that we raise funds…
Survivors, patients
battling cancer, and those who have lost their battle with cancer are honored
during the Luminaria ceremony. Luminaria with the honored persons' names on
them are placed around the track and lit at dusk. These Luminaria stay lit all
night and literally, as well as symbolically, light the way for walkers through
the darkness.
Thank you.
1 Nicholas G. Hope, who was 4, lost his battle
with cancer on Tuesday, September
26, 2006 at his home surrounded, with love, by his family.
2 R. Kenneth Totten,
who was 78, lost his battle with cancer on Sunday, April 1, 2007 at his farm
& home where he was born and resided all of his life in East Amwell
Township, NJ.
